Organisation

The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) is mandated by ESCMID, EMA, ECDC, EFSA and partners across Europe to define, harmonize and standardize antimicrobial breakpoints and testing methods.

EUCAST structure and procedures have been developed with ESCMID, National Antimicrobial susceptibility testing Committees (NACs), EMA and ECDC. Standard Operating Procedures are agreed by the Steering Committee (SC), approved by ESCMID, and form part of the agreement with ECDC. Any structural or procedural change requires approval from the SC and ESCMID and is reported to ECDC.

EUCAST comprises two bodies:

  • General Committee (GC): Chair, Scientific Secretary, Clinical Data Co-ordinator, Technical Data Co-ordinator, Head of EUCAST Development Laboratory (EDL), Educational Officer plus one delegate per member country; may task EUCAST with issues related to susceptibility testing or breakpoint setting.

  • Steering Committee (SC): includes a Chair, Scientific Secretary, Clinical Data Co-ordinator, Technical Data Co-ordinator, Head of EUCAST Development Laboratory, Educational Officer, and representatives of countries with active NACs, and additional experts: Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) experts.
