"Visiting" General Committee members

General Committee representatives on the EUCAST Steering Committee

2–4 members from the EUCAST General Committee are appointed by ESCMID, based on recommendations from the Steering Committee. Members from the General Committee serve two-year terms, renewable only if no other candidates are available. Applications should be made in writing to the chair of the EUCAST Steering Committee.

Observers and External Experts

ECDC and EMA observers may attend Steering Committee meetings. External experts may be co-opted to contribute to specific topics, as agreed by the Steering Committee.

Arrangements for “visiting” General Committee members

Arrangements for “visiting” General Committee members were agreed in 2012 (to be implemented in 2013) to allow any national representative with an interest in a particular agenda item to attend, even if they are not currently members of the Steering Committee. This also allows national representatives from non-European countries to attend meetings intermittently, as EUCAST funding does not cover members from outside Europe.

Any General Committee member may apply to attend a specific Steering Committee meeting. The arrangements are as follows:

  • Up to two additional visiting GC members may attend each Steering Committee meeting by prior agreement. No GC member may attend more than two meetings per year under this arrangement.
  • Steering Committee meeting dates will be posted on the EUCAST website six months in advance.
  • A preliminary agenda will be published three weeks prior to each meeting.
  • GC members must notify the EUCAST Scientific Secretary at least two weeks before the meeting of their wish to attend.
  • If more than two GC members wish to attend a single meeting, the EUCAST Steering Committee Executive will decide who can attend, aiming to ensure fair representation. GC members will then be informed whether they are approved to attend and if any part of the agenda is closed to them (e.g. confidential data on new agents).
  • All travel, accommodation, and related costs must be arranged and paid for by the visiting GC representative.

We wish to always remember our two colleagues and friends who are no longer with us

  Johan Mouton

Johan Mouton

Since the very beginning, Johan Mouton, was important to EUCAST in that he was an ardent supporter of European harmonisation and of bringing PKPD to bear on breakpoint setting.
Johan died in the evening of Tuesday 9 July, 2019. The Steering Committee meeting 8 - 9 of July was the only meeting since 2002 to which Johan could not travel. We shall miss Johan for his courage and his passion for getting it right!
  Martin Steinbakk

Martin Steinbakk

former EUCAST Steering Committee member, sadly died Monday 11 April, 2022. Martin chaired the Norwegian working group on antibiotics (NWGA) for many years and was in 2001 one of the original members of the EUCAST Steering Committee.
He then represented the Norwegian committee and we learnt to appreciate his experience in susceptibility testing, his quiet humour and his sonorous voice. We worked with Martin for many years and now our thoughts are with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.
